Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Free Admission: Which Outfits Qualify?

Gyeongbokgung offers free admission to visitors wearing qualifying hanbok, including foreigners. Both traditional and modernized hanbok can qualify. Simply wearing a hanbok-inspired outfit is not enough. You need the required top and bottom together. Use the checklist below to check your outfit before renting or leaving for the palace.

Last verified: September 29, 2026. Official policy may change. Check the official English guidelines before your visit. The Korean official Q&A provides the detailed exceptions below.

Can Foreigners Enter Gyeongbokgung for Free in Hanbok?

Yes. The Korean official Q&A explicitly says the hanbok exemption applies to Korean and foreign visitors alike. Your outfit still needs to meet the clothing requirements.

What Counts as Hanbok for Free Admission?

Top and bottom combinations

The required combination is a jeogori, the upper garment, with a hanbok skirt or pants.

Traditional, modernized and “fusion” hanbok

The official rules accept both. For an outfit marketed as “fusion” hanbok, check its garments against the requirements rather than relying on the product name.

Details the Korean Q&A clarifies

  • Zipper or no ankle ties: Pants can qualify if their shape conforms to hanbok pants. That does not mean any pair of modern trousers qualifies.

A waist-style hanbok skirt can qualify, but the jeogori must extend down to the waist.

Official guidance note: The English official guideline says jeogori ribbon ties or buttons should be fastened. The Korean detailed FAQ provides a more specific clarification: a jeogori without goreum can still qualify if it retains the required wrap-front collar form.

What Does NOT Qualify?

The official guidance excludes these outfits and combinations:

  • A jeogori worn with jeans.
  • Hanbok pants or a skirt worn with a T-shirt.
  • A durumagi overcoat alone, without the required top and bottom.
  • A one-piece hanbok worn without a jeogori.
  • T-shirt-style modernized hanbok tops are not recognized as qualifying jeogori. This is separate from pairing a hanbok bottom with a regular T-shirt.

Does Rental Hanbok Automatically Qualify?

Check the outfit itself against the official clothing requirements. This guide does not certify any rental shop or guarantee admission for a particular product.

Before You Leave the Rental Shop

  • Check that your outfit includes a jeogori and a hanbok skirt or pants.
  • Check the complete combination, especially if you plan to substitute your own jeans or T-shirt.
  • If the ribbons or pants fastenings look unfamiliar, compare the garment with the Korean official Q&A.
  • Ask the shop to show you how the proposed outfit matches the published requirements.

If You're Unsure at the Entrance

Arrive wearing the complete outfit you checked. If you remain unsure about a garment, ask palace staff whether it meets the published guidelines.

FAQ

Can I wear modern or fusion hanbok?

Modernized hanbok is included in the official rules. A “fusion” label alone does not establish eligibility; check the required top, bottom and garment forms.

Can I wear jeans with a hanbok top?

No. The guidelines specifically exclude a jeogori paired with jeans.

Does a jeogori need goreum ribbons?

Not necessarily. The Korean Q&A accepts a jeogori without goreum if it retains the required hanbok collar form.

Can I wear a one-piece hanbok without a jeogori?

No. The Korean official Q&A says that combination does not qualify.
